A 100 Word Fiction

“Dig there.” She stumbled over the rubble strewn ground. Her sad-eyed guide straightened the yellow hard hat resting on her grey hair. At home on construction sites, what did he know of shrines?

The growl of machinery drowned their words before any were spoken. Track-hoe, skid steer, loader, excavator- these were his rosary. Machines dipped and bowed to ancient gods, clearing the altar where the innocents were sacrificed.

“Stop!” A whistle pierced the air and the excavator stilled, replaced by human hands.

She answers a question not asked. “I would have been with her, but I stopped at the copier.”
